European Young Chemists’ Network

The European Young Chemists’ Network is the young division of EuCheMS. Every chemist under the age of 35 that belongs to any of our fellow societies automatically becomes a member of the EYCN.

The EYCN was founded in 2006 after Jens Breffke and Csaba Janáky had the idea of reuniting European young chemists during the 1st European Chemistry Conference in Budapest.

From this time goal of the EYCN is to promote Chemistry in Europe, as well as to give new educational and networking opportunities to students and professionals. EYCN promote awards in conferences, organize Career Days to improve soft-skills and collaborate in a variety of exchange programs to promote the mobility of our members. To do all this, EYCN partner with powerful industries as well as with other young scientific societies around the world.

The EYCN meets once a year in the Delegates Assembly:

Summary of internship organized by Synthos S. A. as the prize in the contest for participants of the SSPTChem Spring Meeting 2017 in Stegna

Within the organized competition by Synthos S.A., participants of the SSPTChem Spring Meeting 2017 in Stegna could won paid intership in the company.

To take part in this competition, one of the two problems had to be solved and a written solution had to be prepared:

1) Suggest a structure of synthetic rubber for modifying asphalt mixtures and justificate your response.

2) Propose a polymer structure easily soluble in water with high thermal resistance (min. 100ºC) and justificate your response.

The winner of the competition was Nikola Fajkis (1st year of Master Studies – Jagiellonian Univeristy). Her work concerned the amine bis phenol A derivative and its thermal stability.

Herein,we present a brief summary of Nikola's intership:

„As a winner of the contest organized by Synthos S.A, I worked one month as a trainee in the R&D department. The competition job was to design the polymer, which would be water soluble and thermostable at 100 °C. During the intership I worked in SSBR  (Solution-Polymerized Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) team, where I was involved in organic synthesis, especially Grignard's reaction. Due to the moisture sensitive substances, I also learned how to distill under vacuum and work in the glove box.

In addition, for the first time, I had the opportunity to see how large-scale production of the substance looks like. I believe that the knowledge and skills gained at the training will definitely be useful in the future. While working, I expanded my horizons and I also met some amazing people with whom I still keep in touch.

I really recommend participation in competitions organized by potential employers.
I am convinced that the skills acquired during the internships will have positive results in the future.

We would like to thank Synthos S. A. for organizing the competition and we look forward to working together in the future.
